Our History

In October of 1897, Melville B. Malcolm, received his diploma from the Chicago College of Embalming, as approved by the Department of Anatomy, Sanitary Science, Embalming and Funeral Directing giving him the title degree of Funeral Director. This was the start of a long-standing traditional funeral business in the town of Pembroke. Malcolm established himself with his partner James Leach in a downtown Pembroke storefront business entitled "Leach & Malcolm - Funeral Directors & Embalmers". They also specialized in furniture repairing, upholstering and re-polishing. These were the beginnings. Later Roy Deavitt joined Malcolm in the business and in the 1940's, moved to the present location at 141 Renfrew Street. It was here that the business evolved into the modern-day funeral home that it is today. Although there have been a few changes in ownership through the years, the funeral home has always been owned and operated by local individuals, keeping the best interest of the community at heart. Malcolm, Deavitt & Binhammer has a solid reputation built on a tradition of excellence. In the future years, we will endeavour not to forget where the business has come from, however, we will continue to forge ahead with new ideas and concepts which blend with the old tradition this business has come to be recognized for.
